About Raices Unidas

Founded in Houston in 2019, Raices Unidas emerged from a simple, profound observation: while community resources exist, navigating them can be an overwhelming barrier for families in crisis. We chose the name 'Raices Unidas' (United Roots) because we believe that a community is only as strong as the roots that ground and support it.

What began as a localized effort to help our neighbors navigate complex medical and educational systems has grown into a multi-faceted community lifeline. For the past 7 years, we have worked on the front lines, adapting to meet our city's most urgent needs. From hands-on healthcare advocacy and daily resource navigation to immediate, boots-on-the-ground Natural Disaster Relief, we step in where the gaps are widest. Today, Raices Unidas is proud to have positively impacted the lives of more than 20,000 Houstonians, a legacy officially recognized by the City of Houston with the declaration of November 13th as 'Raices Unidas Day.'

We believe every milestone deserves to be celebrated with pride. Our Dignity Boutique is a unique space where students of all ages—from kindergarten, 5th grade, and high school to college graduates—can come and shop for prom, graduation, and award ceremonies. They can choose clothing, shoes, and accessories completely free of charge. If it fits and they love it, it is theirs—no questions asked. All we ask is the name of the school they are actively attending.

Beyond the boutique, Project Prom completely sponsors entire proms and senior activities for underserved schools that otherwise lack the funds for these landmark events. We also award specialized Civic Engagement Scholarships to graduating high school seniors, intentionally focusing on their community involvement and heart for service rather than just academic metrics.

For families in survival mode, the holidays can be a source of immense stress rather than joy. Our Holiday Experience steps in to change that narrative. Every year, we are incredibly selective in partnering with 5 to 7 elementary schools in underserved communities to build a literal winter wonderland. We bring artificial snow, warm jackets, fresh food, live music, beautifully wrapped gifts, and Santa Claus himself to ensure these children receive an unforgettable celebration—which for many, is the only holiday experience they will have.

In the last three years, we proudly expanded this circle of joy to our Senior Citizens living on fixed incomes. Partnering closely with local Senior Citizen Community Centers, we bring this same winter wonderland experience to our elders, ensuring they are wrapped in warmth, celebration, and community respect.

Meet Our Founder

Mary Ann Garcia is a visionary healthcare leader and community advocate with over 20 years of experience in clinical management and emergency medicine operations. As a high-level healthcare executive, Mary Ann has spent two decades navigating the complexities of the medical field—a journey that ultimately inspired her to become a bridge for those the system often leaves behind.

In 2019, Mary Ann founded Raices Unidas to build that bridge. What started as a mission to help neighbors navigate medical and educational hurdles has grown into a vital pillar of the Houston community. Over the past seven years, the organization has evolved to meet the city’s most urgent needs, from life-saving healthcare advocacy to critical natural disaster relief and professional mentorship initiatives like 'Project Prom.' To date, her leadership and community programs have positively impacted the lives of more than 20,000 Houstonians.

Her unwavering commitment to service earned official recognition in 2023, when the City of Houston issued a formal proclamation designating November 13th as an official day of honor for her organization.

Beyond her nonprofit work, Mary Ann is a multi-faceted entrepreneur and mentor. She serves as the CEO of Beauty Factory and the founder of Horizon Healthcare Advocates. Currently completing her Bachelor of Public Health, she continues to blend her executive expertise with her passion for guiding the next generation of professionals toward their own paths of purpose.

A proud, bilingual Houstonian, Mary Ann’s dedication to building a stronger, more resourceful city is deeply personal. As a devoted mother of three, she is driven by the desire to create a better, more supported future—not only for her own children but for every family she serves across the community
